Threats against democracies today
In the modern world today, there is a real and present threat to democracies everywhere. Many of the worlds citizens today, live in countries considered to be under totalitarian rule. The citizens of these nations enjoy a low level of freedom, and have, in some cases, no civil or human rights to speak of. It is estimated that as much as 56% of the worlds population, is living under some form of totalitarian rule. It is important for me to say that i believe the international community today, has lost its ability to effectively counter, the ever emerging threat from authoritarian states, religious or otherwise, that threaten the freedom of democracies around them.
Tampering with free elections, or large scale voter manipulation schemes, are a also a large threat to democracies today. One example often brought up, is the founder of X, Elon Musk, and his manipulation of facts and constant bombardment of users on his multimedia platform X, formerly known as twitter during the 2024 presidential election in The United States. Another example is the Russian interference with the 2016 US Presidential election.
Democracy is a system which gives us a large amount of freedom to do whatever we like with our lives, but it is not a sure thing, democracy can dissapear if we let it, so we must protect it, fight for it with our voices and our pens.
