Venezuela has been attacked by the United States of America. The country, which has been governed as a dictatorship since around 2014 following the death of Hugo Chávez who ruled under a deeply flawed democratic system was struck in several regions, including the capital, Caracas.
According to U.S. officials, the current ruler, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken into custody by American armed forces. The United States has stated that Maduro is facing long-standing criminal charges related to narcotics trafficking and weapons offenses. Claims have also been made that legal action will be taken against his wife, though details remain unclear.
The attack has prompted strong reactions from the international community. Many states and legal experts have condemned the action as a violation of the United Nations Charter. The Charter clearly prohibits the use of force against another country unless it is carried out in self-defense or authorized by a United Nations Security Council resolution. In this case, many governments argue that neither condition appears to have been met.
